It is probably a bad idea to try to make sense of the world. At least if you want to actually succeed in doing so. At these moments, a good eye roll can help me move forward. Below are two examples of my attempts from this week:
First, I read an article about a restaurant, Handsom Her, that once a week charges men more than women. The charge is voluntary, and the "tax" goes to a good cause. With all that, I admit that I rolled my eyes. I appreciated the sentiment, but was not sure if it made sense. A couple of days later, I took my daughter to get a haircut. And, there it was, two almost identical haircuts occurring in the same salon, and the man was going to pay less. The same thing could occur if I went to buy razors, if I bought shampoo, if I went to the dry cleaners, and so on. Every day, I have the opportunity to pay more than a man for the same product, and I don't even get the added benefit of knowing my money is going to support a good cause. I've had to conclude that the 'man tax' makes about as much sense as anything else. At some other point this week, I read two articles about being an immigrant in the same day. One was about the current administration only wanting to allow immigrants who already speak English into the US. As a talking point, this can seem to make a lot of sense, until I read my second article which was about top places for Americans to retire around the world. In almost every write up about places to retire, the ease of being able to use English (in non-English speaking countries) was a primary selling point. The ease of speaking English, regardless of location, is seen as a reasonable expectation by many Americans as they move about the world. I started rolling my eyes again.
