Nothing exists until it enters your life, and then it appears everywhere. You don’t even need to turn over any rocks. Usually it pops out at you and you marvel that you never saw it before. There are so many “for examples” that I don’t know where to begin except by providing you with a photo of the toilet that graced our front porch while our bathroom was being gutted due to a water leak. It can be as simple as a newly discovered food product to toilets on the front porch to something as profoundly challenging as sexism and racism. The food product will start showing up on every menu and sneak into your local grocery store. Toilets on front porches? Now that I've mentioned them, watch out, they will start showing up when you least expect them. As for racism and sexism? We all know that we live in a post sexist and post racist time until something happens that is so blatant that you don’t believe it until it happens yet again. At some point you remember all the past examples and as for the future ones, they are no longer possible to ignore. Still don't believe me? How about depression? It is the problem of the few, you thought, under a rock or two. Then it comes into your life and soon everyone you know can tell you the dosage that they are taking. It is so prevalent that once you start looking, you may find that you are the anomaly in the event that it has not yet touched your life. But then, you won’t know, will you because you can still deny its existence just as you did toilets on front porches and just as you no longer will be able to do with the word ubiquitous. How about climate changes? The environment is fine, in fact, it is better than fine until your house starts flooding from the ground water and unprecedented high tides; see Florida if you are still unconvinced. When it seeps into your living room, you know it’s a something. You may not want to name it yet, but it exists and it is everywhere. Scientists who are able to come up with an explanation for something they can’t see and can only imagine because that is what the science tells them must be, amaze me. Everyone else, even with the concrete examples in front of them every day, generally don’t believe in anything they don’t want to. Yet, there are those among us who can infer the very, very largest and the very smallest of the unknown in the universe. Somehow it entered their lives and they find it everywhere. The scientists exist and, if I squint, even a little bit, they will show up. All this I know to be true and yet I question the existence of my car keys. Maybe they have not entered my life. Or maybe it is the black hole those scientists were talking about. Whatever it is, once I find it, my keys will appear everywhere.
